MESSIAH DAVID AND BATSHEVA
 INTERPRETATION 2004

Jews and Christians mean different things, when they think of "REDEMPTION".
Christians have been content with the redemption from "sin",
and Jews are waiting for "a new earth" .
Both believe in a REDEEMER who comes from the outside.



Both can rely on the promises given 2500 years ago.
"I'll create a New Heaven and a New Earth", says one,
while another does talk about a change of HEART,
but he is not consistent.
Once he dares to say: "Make yourself a New Heart and a New Spirit",
but twice it is God who "gives" a New Heart and a New Spirit,
or " One Heart and a New Spirit"

[Js.65:17; Ez 18:31; 36:26; 11:19]

 

 

At the age of five, in 1944,
I asked myself :
"Can there be a world without war?"


When I learnt about these promises,
I tried to wrap myself in them,
as does the prophet in Chagall's
"Promise to Jerusalem".

But to no avail.

At the age of 25, in 1964,
I chose the name Rakhêl,
because of her weeping,
not because of the promise to her.

In the book Jeremiah 31,15 it is Rakhêl,
who represents the Mother of Israel,
and her " vo i c e " of " w e e p i n g "
has been heard now for 2600 years:

"A voice is heard in Ramah,
lamentation , bitter weeping;
Rakhêl is weeping over her children
and she refuses to be comforted
for her children, because they are NOT."

Chagall's "Jeremiah Comforted by an Angel"
comforts me, not because of the angel,
but because there was another human being,
Chagall - who identified with Jeremiah...

 

 

By studying and experiencing over and over again - the plight of Kayin and Hevel
[Genesis 4]

I had to learn, that the redeeming has to be done by Kayin and Hevel themselves.

Kayin's name is explained by his mother:
"kaniti I created , a man with YHWH"

"Kayin", the first-born, the first human being born from a woman,
is every human being.

Kayin is ME ...

I work and create and I want to give you the fruits of it,
but you do not receive my fruits.

I feel then, that I am not worthy, not valid, not equal,
that I am nothing.

Not knowing how to deal with this horrible feeling,
I project my feeling on you ......
and I might even kill you.


"Hevel", on the other hand, means "waft of breath or air"
and hence : "nothing" [compare Js 49:4]

"Hevel", the second human being born from a woman,
is every human being.

Hevel is ME.

When we "were out on the field" and "Kayin said",
i.e. warned me in some way,
I didn't do anything, I didn't stand up to him,
help him or fight him or at least run away.
I let myself be killed like a Nothing.

"When a Muslim kills a Muslim, they'll be both in Hell"
,
says the holy Hadith.



As Kayin and as Hevel I am a victim,
a victim of my lack of self-acceptance.
How can an exterior redeemer change this?

It is ME, who has to learn to accept myself totally.

To be able to accept myself, I must learn to accept my feelings and my body.

I cannot accept my feelings unless I breathe-move-sound them, vibrate them through Body.

I cannot breathe-move-sound, unless I accept Body and let Body be my healer and redeemer.

 

 

 

I just discovered an enlightening sculpture of Phillip Ratner.
"Kajin and Hevel", I thought at first glance.
But seeing the title I understood that it's Kajin and Hevel redeemed!

The puzzle pieces of what I now call "Messiah David&Bat-Sheva",
are mainly gathered from seemingly boring biblical genealogies.
Uncountable individual names and collective names of people
who were born, begot sons, rarely daughters, and died.
In these genealogies I discovered the secrets of redemption.
And the hint was always the sudden appearance of a woman...


There are 10 generations
from Adam to Noah,
as from Noah to Abraham,
and as from Yehuda~Tamar to David.
The seventh from Adam, i.e. the sixth from Kajin, is Lemekh.

All of a sudden [Gn 4:19] two wifes are mentioned, Ada and Tzilla,
the purpose of which is - as I learnt from Ratner's sculpture -
to bring forth a wondrous idyll of three sons:


Yaval - "the father of those who sit amidst tent and herd"

Yuval - "the father of all those who play the lyre and the pipe."

Tuval-Kayin - "burnisher of every blade of bronze and iron"

[Gn 4:, 20-22]
In the sculpture Yaval implies Hevel, with the staff of the shepherd,
Tuval-Kayin implies Kayin, with the bronze skythe of the peasant
and hopping on both is Yuval, who sounds the pipe and David's lyre.
This idyll will indeed manifest,
once Kayin and Hevel will accept themselves wholly.

But how will this happen?
Ratner ignored one more, but decisive, offspring of Lemekh:

"Tuval-Kayin's sister was Naama".
[Gn 4:,22]

Naama is - like "Naomi", Rut's Mother-in-Love - "the pleasant one".
But more important is, that the only other Naama in the Bible
was the Ammonite (=Canaanite!) mother of Salomo's son (!), King Rehabeam
and is - because of this - mentioned three times! [Kings I 14: 21.31, Chronicles II 12:13]
It is not by chance that Kayin's wife, the Canaanite Bosmat, appears 6 times!

 

For it's the female aspect, - gender and essence - of God and Human,
which - in its Canaanite degenerated form - had to be thrown out,
when YHWH made his appearance in the evolution of humankind.

But YHWH= all that happened, is happening, will happen , is ONE.
(Dt 6:4)
and nothing, not even darkness, not even evil exists outside of him.
(Js 45:7 )

And we humans,
rays of the One Sun,
waves of the One Ocean,
colors of the ONE Light,
cannot heal , be redeemed or even survive on this planet,
unless we redeem the "Canaanite" FEELING and PASSION in us,
and integrate them into the spiritual-intellectual image of our God.

It is Naama's presence
in the tetrahedron of Lemekh's offsprings,
which promises the redemption of
Kayin's and Hevel's self-acceptance
and the transformation
of the curse-burdened passion
of David toward Batsheva
into the ONENESS
between WHOLE, though separate, beings.


This is the message of "God has Evolved", as captured - I hope - in the condensed quotes in "Body is God"

There was a redeemer in the past, Moses, probably an Egyptian prince, supposedly from the tribe of Levi.
The future redeemer will have to come from the tribe of Judah, more exactly from the Hause of David.


It wasn't the artist's intention to frame Moses, God's channel amidst the Burning Bush, --- by David, the sound-healer and David, the war-hero.

But as this triptych created itself on this page, I wondered again, why it was David who became the metaphor for the redeemer and not Moses.

If I claim, that David was the King of Feelings, Moses- to no lesser degree - exemplifies for us the capacity to feel and express his feelings .

In the Bible there is only one Moses and only one David, but the name David appears almost 1100 times, while "Moses" appears 780 times.

I think, David symbolizes the redeemer of Israel for the same reason that Ya'aqov symbolizes the nation of Israel:

Their "morality" is below the morality of an average person ...

It wouldn't be very helpful to believe in a redeemer
who represents "goodness", "virtue" and "righteousness".
How would he have understanding for the Kayins and Hevels?

Ya'aqov, the "Heel-Sneak", teaches us,
how    he    wrestled    with    himself,
until he was able to uproot the enmity
in his wronged brother's heart.
After that he entered Sichem/Nablous
"shalem", i.e. "whole".
[Gn 33:18]

But this wholeness got lost again,
when his sons, Shim'on and Levi (!),
perpetrated their atrocious deception
of the surrendering people of Sichem,
who had trusted Ya'aqov and his clan
as being "shlemim", i.e. "whole".
Their excuse - the rape of Dina:
"Should our sister be treated like a whore?"


Again I am juxtaposing two of Ratner's creations:
"Jacob becomes Israel"
"David and Jonathan"
.
Aren't they the same man?
The one with beard & hair and the one with wings?
The one with bow & arrow and the one with a lyre?

But WOMAN is missing and PASSION is hidden.

 




"Sex-Drive" would be the modern term for "PASSION".
But since David's "sex-drive" towards bathing Bat-Sheva,
-however criminal David's and Bat-sheva's surrender to it-
begets "Messiah",

I want to play with the pun PASSION, for it means both:
"sexual desire or lust" and "the suffering of Christ ".

May I say:

Once "Messiah Within"
will have redeemed Feelings and Body
David will no longer be a victim of his lust
nor victimize others,
no crimes nor crosses will prevail,

but exalted PASSION
between lovers who are whole.


It is not by accident , that the consonants of D a V i D
are those of D-V-D, the "Lover" in the Song of Songs.
