Birth of the Succayah
a scientific model of an SPS business
finding the place,
attracting helpers,
structuring space,
building succahs,
an office in town,
inventing facilities,
facing the authorities
registering as business

The permission the Mayor of Mitzpe-Ramon
had granted us
to park on the edge of the Crater , below the observatory,
had expired and I had finally discovered the "appointed" place.
We moved our mobile houses there, on November 17, 1989.
Worse than the technical difficulties linked to this maneuver
was the fear, that "they" would not let us stay there.....

I still had not solved the problem
of how a succah should look like.
Having worked for a whole semester with a class for architectural design,
with the goal of coming up with 30 suggestions by the end of the semester,
produced the only result of WHAT A SUCCAH WAS NOT.
But then - one day in December - I ran into Dani Qish, the sculptor,
one of those who were evacuated from the beach of Sharem-E-Sheikh,
after Sinai, occupied by Israel in 1967, was given back to Egypt in 1979 (?).
"Dani, I've heard, you work not only in
stone, but also in wood",
I approached him in the middle of the local bank, out of all places.
"Could you imagine, how a succah should
look like and also build it?"
I told him a few things about my vision and he responded promptly:
"Yes, similar to what I had built for myself
into the water at the beach:"
And with simple gestures of his hands he designed it in the air:
"A triangle of electricity or phone pylons,
material to cover them as protection against sun, wind and rain,
and on top of all palmfronds."
I was exhilarated.
"I have no problem building your succahs,
but you have to provide all the materials yourself."
The next day he came to see me in the future Succah Wadi.
I brought him to a spot high up on its northern slope and apologized:
"I feel, that here should be the first succah,
but I'm afraid, the terrain is too difficult."
"Never mind! You should start, where your heart is,
let's proceed from the difficult to the easy!"
thus turning around a Hebrew proberb:
from the easy to the difficult.
But he did not listen to himself.
I brought him to the other side of the wadi,
to the foot of the of the rocks which crown the "Hill of the Angels'
Flight".
"Why not here, there's such good energy
here,"
he asked and I responded:
"Because to a place, where there is such energy,
one should come in awe and part again.
But I do not want to interfere with your creativity."
[To be continued later]
After a month, a storm smashed the succah and carried it away in front of
its guest's eyes.

I'm adding a few images which exemplify the interior
of a succah,
and this , since I was reminded of it, by a bungalow in the jungle,
to
which I travelled "virtually" in April 2010
The re-newed Lea-Succah on August 16, 2003,
when I and three of my grandchildren (Arnon, Rotem and Yael-who
is photographing) were permitted to be guests there.

"Lea" - second generation R&D
March 14, 2011,
Since I never came around to tell the history announced
on this page,
I shall use the free space on it for inserting more of the old negatives
which I let scan recently.
continuation from "the
Succah's second stage"
A composition of views of the Succayah in the
first year (1990),
when there were only the seven succahs
for guests,
Abraham and Sarah, Yitzkhaq and Rivkah, Ya'acov with Lea and Rachel
and still no cabins for hosts and activities.
Of course, I was in need of heavenly signs... A rainbow above the Ya'acov-Succah
Was it me who moved or did the rainbow move?
in any case it now appears exactly between Sarah and Ya'acov
Now rainbow above Lea and Rachel, but the bond
between Ya'acov and those two is clear, and so is the path up to Ya'acov!
Guests on the Hill of the Angels' Flight at sunrise
Guests walk down towards the Succayah, while
the Hill of the Angels' Flight still casts a huge shadow
In order to reach "Abraham" these
people have to pass "Yitzkhaq" and "Rivkah" -[ to the
right on the ridge: Sarah]
A view of the early Succayah from the East:
the water-tank is lonely and so is the shower hexagon,
the minibus still parks next to the Abraham-Succah,
the jeep is still the only car.
A glorious composition:
to the south of the Hill of the Angels' Flight, on the slope: Yitzkhaq,
to the north of it, in the wadi: Lea
A magnificent view of Lea and Rachel in the
Wadi
A magnificent view of Yitzkhaq on the other
side of the wadi, and behind it - the path to the Ramon-Crater
A magnificent view of Lea from Ya'acov
Also from Ya'acov: across Sarah and across the ridge
which divided between the wadi of the Succayah and the wadi, where my bus
parked.
A glorious view of Sarah, the neighbor of Ya'acov
on this side of the wadi
