A SUCCAH GLOSSARY
2002_09_11 ; last update: 2003_03_15
On Febr. 22, 2010 I was sent a link to the site of Itai Harari,
who suggests 3 day hikes into the Negev-Desert
for small groups from 2 to 10 participants only.
He calls his site "SILENCE"...
I feel, that Itai's approach to the Desert is very much like mine.
and I hope, he'll open the SPS, the Space, Purity and Silence, to many people.
"lekh-lekhâ"

Gn 12,1.3: 'Go-to-yourself', for only then "will be blessed in you all the families of the earth" |
Topography of Succah in the Desert.
The small wadi I found to be the right site for Succah in the Desert
runs into another wadi, which comes from the edge of the Ramon-Crater
runs along the last part of the
dust-road of 2,5 km which I mention so often,
and which connects the small road Mitzpe-Ramon - Observatory with the Succah,
passes the Succah and soon after joins the
grand Zin-Wadi, mentioned in the Bible.
I found it symbolic, that this grand wadi, which gave the biblical "Desert
Zin" its name,
starts 5 km to the west as a ditch as inconspicuous as millions of others.
but after a journey east, north and again east evolves
to full splendour near Sde-Boqer,
before crushing down into the Syrian-African
Rift.
The hill, which is dominating the Succah wadi is called on the map "884",
which is its height above sea-level.
I call it the Hill of the Angels' Flight.
But what is really dominating the area of the Succah and of its adjacent town,
Mitzpe-Ramon
is the Ramon-Crater.
The view from the point on the ridge, which
is the closest to the Succah and most frequented by its guests and visitors,
It was towards sunset in July 2002, when I took this picture.

GLOSSARY with pronounciation MIDBAR
= Desert, from the same root as
davar
= word The "SUCCAH"
[plural: "SUCCOT"] in the BIBLE
"SUCCAH IN THE DESERT"
"SUCCAYAH" or
"SUCCAH=YAH" Often - in our daily usage - SPS
= Space, Purity, Silence, the resources of the desert
|
The "succah"
in Jewish tradition
is not only a symbol of Wo/Man as a guest in the desert,
but also of Wo/Man's creativity and creation,
as I was taught by another inventive pioneer in the desert,
a rabbi, who founded a new kind of
a religious high-school at Mitzpe-Ramon,
He said:
"The first thing a Jew does, when he comes home
from Yom-Kippur
(the Day of Atonement, 24 hours of fasting
and praying)
which is a day beyond Time,
is that he hammers the first nails for his family's succah."
(The Festival of Succot takes place 4 days
later.)
What also needs to be explained here,
are the reasons for the names of the two dominating hills:
"The Hill of the Angels'
Flight" and "Mount
Lekh-Lekhâ"

This brochure of 1994 - in a Hebrew,
English and French edition - was made by my son Immanuel Rosenzweig, as the
printed brochures before and after.
Credit for the idea of adopting the forked line of St. Exupery"s Little
Prince as part of the Succah's logo - belongs to Ruth Rosenzweig, Tomer's
mother.
The following flyer was prepared for the Israel Tourism Exhibition in Tel-Aviv,
May 1993,
where we erected one of our pyramidal tents on a balcony of the Opera House,
viewing the sea.
After my "Lekh-Lekha"
from the Succah, April 1996,
my successors Gadi & Efrat Lybrok, professional photographers and owners
of a photo studio,
advertised the Succah on original photos:

Supplement to the official document of
"the LTD Company for the Benefit of the Public"
established on16.2.94 and registered via Lawyer David Sandowski, Jerusalem
DESERT RESOURCES COMPANY. LTD
For utilizing the Comparative Advantage of the Desert:
SPACE, PURITY, SILENCE (SPS)
[a 'market demand' of those
who need to recover sometimes
from the Crowdedness, Pollution and Noise in the City]
The basic socio-economic infrastructure in the Desert:
"Succayah" | a business for family-like hospitality in the desert |
"Midbaron" | a hamlet that renders services to the succayahs |
"Midbaryah" | a desert municipality: 12 succayahs and a midbaron |
The Succah Vision, or "An Economic Approach to the
SPS of the Desert",
uses the term "Succah" as a symbol
for the stay of Wo/Man "in unsown land"
[Jeremia 2,2]
[listen to the expanded song, now
in Song-Game 2007]
as well as for the creativity of Wo/Man and her/his creation.
The first model of a "Succayah"
which has been functioning now for four years,
is composed of seven Succahs for one to 12 guests
(+ seven mobile succahs=pyramidal
tents, if necessary)
+ three cabins for hosts
+ a cabin for an artist
(who would, e.g. create ceramics and invite guests to take part in a creation
common to adam and adamah)
[The fifth cabin, "Eliezer" was not
yet built, and the "Ishma'el" became crucial for the "Aetgar
be-Midbar" - but burnt in 2009 ? and was not rebuilt]
All the structures are equipped with electicity from the sun.
The water (shower/kitchen) is brought by the hosts by jeep,
as long as the Nabatean
technology of gathering rain water has not yet been renewed.
"A Succayah" is built on t w o
p r i n c i p l e s
which allow Wo/Man to live in the desert without imposing her/himself
and without destroying the very treasure of the desert, its resource of SPS.
1. "Dispersion":
the limited number of Succahs and of guests
promises a balance between Man and Nature (or: Adam and Adamah)
and meaningful communication between Adam and Adam.
2) "Temporariness" of structures, services and
ownership:
a) the temporariness of the structures -
allows the Succayah to move to another place
in case the present location is needed for another purpose
or in case the city comes too close which will damage the SPS
c) the Temporariness of the hosts' services
allows them to make a break or to leave,
in case they become tired of welcoming guests into their heart day after day
c) The temporariness of the ownership
prevents the temptation to expand
and to impose unnecessary civilization and thus destroy the SPS
("the investion" of the entrepreneur is a temporary loan)
[2002_08_ 10: I do not
remember, what I meant with this sentence. Loan from whom?
As I see it today - and this is very relevant now for Gadi&Efrat -
any investion should be covered by the current income.
If not - the "foster-parent" has to get his/her reward from the
satisfaction of "fostering" the Succayah.
This is - I admit - difficult in the present time-period of capitalism.
It is one of several reasons, why today I would prefer the mobile model of
a hosting business,
which I developed following my experience in Sinai, and at the Red and Dead
Sea [1996-99]
This belongs to the category "Small tourist Enterprises"
It functions as an i n d e p e n d e n t business
provided that it is integrated in an overall socio-economic lay-out ,
which preserves the SPS of the desert:
In the center of about 12 succayahs,
each one unique according to the character of its founders and its target
guests,
will be established a "Midbaron", a permanent desert hamlet,
which will serve the succayahs and their people
(including local agriculture and services from teachers/healers
in the realm of "Holistic Health of Body-Spirit-Soul"
and from "Human Development" experts).
A Midbaron + about 12 succayahs
will compose a "midbaryah", a kind of municipal autonomic unit.
Many midbaryas with different economic focuses
will create the socio-economic basis in which all other ideas and projects
of entrepreneurs
who want to create in the Negew,
will integrate,
provided that they integrate into the very basic economy of the Desert: SPS
Goals of "the Company for Desert Resources LTD
(from the paragraphs phrased by the lawyer on the base of my formulations)
(a) for the realization of the comparative advantage of
the desert - Space, Purity, Silence (SPS)
- via the establishment and running of desert hosting enterprises
which will give integrated services
which will comprise among other things tourism, recreation, creation, research,
learning and healing,
and this on the base of general principles,
which will guarantee the preservation of the treasure of the desert,
which are temporariness (structures, services, location and usage of soil)
and yekhidiut (limitedness of size)
(b) for the promotion and usage of research and development
of technologies
in the area of building and building materials,
provision of electricity and water,
facilities for sewage and heating,
systems for transport and communication,
which will enable the integration of modern Man in the desert
while preserving the ecology and the SPS which are the basis of Desert Economy
(c) for the sake of creating permanent settlements [midbaronim]
the economy of which will be based on
the production of products and rendering of services for the temporary hosting
enterprises.
(d) for the creation of an infrastructure of a socio-economic
network
which will integrate temporariness and permanence
and which will not encourage enterprises which are not based on
the principle of preserving the SPS of the Desert,
which is the foundation of desert civilization.
(e) for the sake of establishing contracts and franchises
for the establishment of projects of hosting enterprises
for time periods which will be decided upon,
while choosing the entrepreneuers which establish and run them,
while training and guiding them in the spirit of the SPS Desert Economy,
and while mediating between them and the central and local government , as
needed.
