tune: From among the ten tunes I opened on the piyutim-website, I ardently wish to listen again to at least four of them Ashkenazi Version, performed by David Ulman This is sung like a beautiful concert aria. The chorus is known to me Ashkenazi Version, tune by Michael David Levi, performed by Shuli Natan Only some of the stanzas are sung. For the chorus another female voice joins Shuli. I've often heard Shuli's performance, and can sing this tune too, but it's not the one that I was taught in 1961, when I was a scholarship student in Jerusalem and used to go to the synagogue on Shabbat Eve Ashkenazi Version of the Danzig Community, Germany, This tune, too, is familiar to me. A choir sings the chorus and the first stanza Version of France, Province, performed by Adolf Atia a merry tune, only 3 stanzas I regret, that - having so many choices - I did not come around to listen to the many oriental versions of this song. |
Shabbat Eve June 1979 and August 1979 |
Shabbat Eve at our home in
Ramat-Hadar, Hod-Hasharon, August 1979, Ronnit and Immanuel |
When I listened to some
10 performances out of the 30 presented on the piyutim-site, I was so moved, that I was sad again, that it is not my path to be a religious Jew. The beauty of the tunes, of the singing and playing, even of part of the lyrics with the connotations to biblical texts, and most of all, the diversity of the people of Israel as it expresses in these 30 performances, is overwhelming me, when ever I come in contact with it. |

Mika on our way out from the Ibirapuera Park:
Immanuel had quickly bought a frisbee , in order to play with Tomer and Mika

Sao Paulo, Monday , April 25, 2011
A father walking together with his first marriage son and his second marriage daughter
Typical: a modern building through the mess of cables
and the beauty of trees
My family knows, that I'm an "anti-consumerists", and shopping or walking around market-places, is not exactly "my thing".... But I tried to make the best of it, and this is how I discovered, that "even angels are black", and that the "Holy Family for sale" can be arranged differently: The "Holy Child for sale" not in the arms of the mother, but in self-confident posture in front of his parents! |
In the old trainstation [which reminded
me of the trainstation in Stuttgart in my childhood]- now an excellent
market-hall
I'm sitting with father and daughter in front of a the fantastic fruit-store
of a Libanese.
While I'm slowly delighting in
eating my "Isai", the two again play a game, according to which one has to withdraw his/her hands soon enough so as not to get smacked by the hands of the other. |
Mika's photo |
But
then Mika invents a game, which I haven't seen before: "a riddle"! She asks her father questions about the biblical story of Pharao and the oppression of the Hebrews |
Abba
delights in his daughter's smartness |
In a huge storehouse we're waiting for Tomer,
who keeps searching for a specific kind of shoes
Isn't that a grand picture of the grand old lady,
captured by Mika?
It is our last evening in Sao Paulo,
and Efrat and Immanuel have found out a very special restaurant
where we are sitting under a 300 year old Mango tree.
At one point of the dinner Tomer - can we believe it -
hugs his father and expresses his gratefulness "for these wonderful days".
And then he gets up and gives his hurting shoulders
(about which we hear only at this moment!)
a "Tomer-massage", as he used to give him already at the age of
8.

On our last day in Sao Paulo, Tuesday,
April 26, 2011,
we have time to be among ourselves till 3:30 PM.
Then we'll take the the EL-AL crew bus to the airport,
and Abba will have to be on duty once more.
There are ever so many opportunities for playing with Abba |
