Brich
The
contrast between the every-day language and the depth of Israel's pain expressed by the poet squeezes my heart, whenever I sing it to my own tune. Though most of Heine's works are translated into English, or so I read, I couldn't find a translation of this poem. So I'll do it myself - though I'll fail to convey a creation like "im flammenstillen Gemuet" - in fhe flame-still "mind" (there is no equivalent in English for the German "Gemuet", nor is there a possibility in the English grammar to combine the words "flames" and "still, quiet" as a single paradoxical term) Many links to Heine on an encyclopedia site: For instance: "Set to music by 11 composers ranging from Mendelssohn to Richard Strauss, 40 of Heinrich Heine's poems were performed by eight singers and six pianists as part of last week's "Heine in Jerusalem Conference." (Dec. 2001) The very quantity of the songs and artists testifies to the immense inspiration Heine has radiated onto composers of his own and later generations. |
Break out in loud lamenting,
|
2007_05_08 This started to create itself in the pool today, after I had sung – among other songs I want to practice - "Brich aus in lauten Klagen" and tears came up during the third and fourth stanza. I talked to Ya'aqov in my heart: "You see, this can never stop, ever, ever! We have to cry those tears as long as we have a memory!" Since I was "telling" him that in Hebrew, I suddenly started to translate the song…. |

- Mika's Heaven on Earth
I follow my understanding and new lekh-lekhâ on January 1, 2009, that - after 7 years - I should no longer create new pages on my 2 websites, but intermingle the evidence of new experiences with that on existing pages. On August 1, I decided to re-employ song-page after song-page for documenting and exploring the evolution of my youngest grandchild, a starchild whose assignment for this planet seems to be: to demonstrate by her own living and doing, how to playfully create from moment to moment "zest-fully and full-filled" [see previous composition] |
